GOVERNMENT POVERTY ALLEVIATION PROGRAMMES IN NIGERIA AND ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT OF THE PEOPLE OF IMO STATE

Abstract

This study has examined government poverty alleviation programmes in Nigeria and economic empowerment of the people of Imo State. The study was informed to identify the impact of the government poverty reduction programmes in achieving sustainable development in Nigeria in general and Imo State in particular. The work used survey research design, and questionnaire served as the instrument of data collection. The data collected were presented in tables and analyzed using simple percentage and chi-square. The study discovered that inadequate funding does not significantly affect poverty alleviation programmes in Imo State, there is no significant relationship between corruption and poverty alleviation programme in Imo State, and lack of proper coordination /poor design does not significantly affect poverty alleviation programmes in Imo State. Therefore we conclude that the Nigerian government should involve the people and avoid corruption in its poverty alleviation programmes. It was recommended that government should effectively fund poverty alleviation programmes so as to achieve economic empowerment of the people.
