SECURITY AS A DILEMMA TO DEMOCRACY IN NIGERIA
Abstract
This thesis investigates the intricate relationship between security challenges and democracy in Nigeria. It aims to shed light on the implications of security dilemmas for democratic processes, how law and order have been maintained by the security forces while upholding democratic principles, and the influence of civil society organizations in promoting democracy and security. A survey design method was employed to gather data from 40 respondents representing various segments of Nigerian society. The findings reveal a diverse range of perspectives on these critical issues. While some respondents believe that security challenges can stimulate democratic resilience, others see them as hindrances to democratic development. The role of security forces in balancing security and democracy remains polarized, with some perceiving a prioritization of democratic values and others disagreeing. Civil society organizations also evoke mixed perceptions, with some considering them positive agents of change and others expressing concerns. To navigate these complexities effectively, policymakers must recognize and address diverse perspectives, strengthen democratic institutions, deepen democratic principles, reform the security policy, enforce anti-corruption measures, and implement electoral reforms. These recommendations are crucial for fostering a secure and democratic Nigeria. Keywords:
